Sustainable Angling in Scotland Catch and Release Guide

Catch and release is a vital practice in sustainable angling, ensuring the longevity of fish populations and the health of our waterways. Fisheries Management Scotland’s latest guidance provides anglers with updated best practices to enhance fish survival rates during catch and release.

Guidance Overview:

  • Keep It Cool: Fish are more vulnerable in warmer water temperatures. Aim to fish during cooler times of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings, to reduce stress on the fish.

  • Keep Hands Off: Avoid handling fish directly. Use appropriate tools to unhook fish without touching them, preserving their protective slime layer and reducing the risk of infection.

  • Keep It Clean: Always check, clean, and dry your gear before and after fishing to prevent the spread of diseases, parasites, and invasive species.

  • Keep It Under: Keep fish submerged in water during the release process to increase their chances of survival.

Additional Recommendations:

  • Use Barbless, Single Hooks: These are easier to remove and cause less injury to fish.

  • Employ Soft, Knotless Nets: Such nets are gentler on fish, reducing damage to scales and fins.

  • Utilize Strong Leaders or Lines: This helps in landing fish quickly, minimizing exhaustion and stress.

  • Carry Long-Nosed Forceps and Line Cutters: These tools facilitate quick and safe unhooking.

  • Avoid Felt-Soled Boots: Felt can harbor invasive species; opt for alternative materials.
