Glasgow Angling Centre and Angling Scotland have today announced that from 1st February 2026, the first 10,000 individuals joining Angling Scotland will get their membership fee back in the form of a voucher to spend either on-line at fishingmegastore.com or in-store at Glasgow or Edinburgh Angling Centres!

Angling Scotland Chair, Alison Baker, said, “We are delighted to announce this partnership and extremely generous offer, which will not only benefit our members but hopefully help to increase membership of Angling Scotland and allow us to bring more pressure to bear on Scottish Ministers, Government Departments, businesses, and other key stakeholders to address the seemingly ever-increasing number of threats to angling”.

There are an estimated 400,000 anglers in Scotland today, and over the years it has become evident that a significant percentage of recreational anglers do not feel that the sport governing bodies can represent their interests and concerns as non-competitive anglers.  The fact that the majority of anglers do not belong to an organisation that can effectively represent their interest not only results in them having no voice as individuals but also means that we as a sector are unable to bring to bear the weight of 400,000 anglers/voters when engaging with the Scottish Government and other key stakeholders on major issues affecting the aquatic environment, angling and anglers.  In an attempt to address this, in April 2025 Angling Scotland decided to offer an individual membership, open to everyone.

Glasgow Angling Centre Managing Director, Paul Devlin, said “With increasing threats to our sport, fish, and environment, it’s more crucial than ever that we come together and demonstrate the strength of our collective passion and commitment.  Our focus has always been to champion a unified voice for all anglers in Scotland, and we believe that Angling Scotland is best placed to deliver that.”

Why should I join?

Angling in Scotland is facing an ever-increasing number of threats to its future. Environmental impacts due to climate change; pollution from sewage discharges, industrial spills, agricultural run-off, and from commercial salmon farming; predation; poaching & illegal/unlawful fish removals; spread of disease and invasive non-native species; as-yet-unknown impacts of other reintroduction/rewilding programs; increasing restrictions on access for angling; pressure from the anti-angling lobby, etc, etc.

The list goes on and on! Angling Scotland is the only body that is set up specifically to represent the interests of all Anglers, irrespective of whether they fish recreationally or competitively or what discipline of angling they participate in. It is the only body that can unite ALL anglers and potentially generate sufficient membership to bring pressure on Scottish Ministers and other key stakeholders to affect the real change that we need so urgently!

In addition to dealing with threats to habitats, fish, and fishing Angling Scotland is working to ensure that angling is available to ALL, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or geographic location.  We aim to achieve this by bringing together all the types of angling; training and licensing coaches; removing barriers and providing opportunities to try angling and pathways for both competitive and recreational anglers to support the next generation; and ensuring there is a future.  We all know that Angling has great benefits – enabling people to be outdoors, improving mental and physical health and wellbeing as well as cognitive skills, and bring people closer to wildlife.  But it also has huge benefits for the environment.  Anglers are the ‘eyes and ears’ of our rivers, lochs and seas. They are uniquely placed to notice the subtle changes to the aquatic environment and behaviour of fish that are often the first signs of a problem, and they have a vested interest in reporting environmental issues and championing the drive for clean water.
